Vrgada Island: Where time flows slower and the soul finds peace

Article author: Vlado Šestan / Travel Advisor

In the peaceful embrace of the Pašman Channel, not far from the lively Biograd na Moru, lies the island of Vrgada, which captivates with its beauty and tranquility at first sight. This small Dalmatian pearl, measuring just over two square kilometers, hides a rich history, offers a unique way of life and is slowly but surely opening its doors to visitors eager for an authentic island experience.

    Turbulent history

The history of Vrgada goes back a long way, as evidenced by archaeological finds that indicate the presence of life as early as Roman times. However, the first written mentions of the island date back to the Middle Ages, when Vrgada was part of the Zadar commune. Over the centuries, the island has changed masters, leaving behind traces of different cultures and influences. One of the most important historical sites is the church of St. Andrew the Apostle, whose foundations date back to the 11th century, and which still stands proudly today as the guardian of the island's heritage. Centuries-old stone houses, narrow alleys and dry stone walls tell stories about the difficult lives of the islanders who traditionally engaged in fishing, olive growing and agriculture.

    Peaceful life

Life on Vrgada today flows at a peaceful pace, far from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Around 160 permanent residents cherish a traditional way of life, relying on the bounty of the sea and land. Fishing is still an important branch of the economy. Olive groves and vineyards provide quality fruits, and local olive oil and wine are valued for their authenticity and taste. A strong sense of community and neighborliness permeates everyday life, and traditional festivals and customs are carefully preserved and passed on to younger generations. Children still play carefree in the streets, and the elderly enjoy long afternoon conversations on stone benches. There is also an elementary school up to the eighth grade.

    Tourist summer

Tourism on Vrgada is developing slowly and thoughtfully, with the aim of preserving the natural beauty and authenticity of the island. The main tourist attractions are the beaches and crystal clear sea, ideal for swimming, diving and sailing. In bays such as Luka and Podbrizi, there are pebble and sandy beaches surrounded by pine forests, which provide the perfect refuge from the summer heat. Accommodation is in private apartments and holiday homes, which allows guests to fully experience the island way of life. Several restaurants and taverns offer fresh seafood specialties and traditional Dalmatian dishes, prepared with local ingredients. There is also one shop on the island.
Several times a day, a catamaran runs to Pakoštane, which takes about twenty minutes. During the season, it can be crowded, with up to 1000 daily tourists visiting the island, who come to swim.

    Peace and enjoyment

What makes Vrgada special is its untouched nature and peaceful atmosphere. You won't find large hotels or noisy clubs here. Instead, you will be greeted by the silence of the bay, the scent of pine trees and lavender, and the friendliness of the local population. Vrgada is an ideal destination for those looking for a vacation away from mass tourism, wanting to relax in untouched nature and experience authentic Dalmatian charm. Walks along the well-maintained paths along the coast and through olive groves, and simply enjoying the view of the endless blue sea, will fill the soul of every visitor.

Vrgada still retains its island identity and uniqueness. A visit to this charming island is a journey back in time, a return to a simpler way of life and an opportunity for a true vacation in an oasis of peace and beauty. Vrgada is not just a destination, it is an experience to remember and to which one will gladly return.
