Marinko Kujundžić and Ruža Juhas are the winners of the attractive manifestation of Croats from Bač "Competition of cartoonists", i.e. reapers in hand-mowing grain, which was held on Saturday next to the local church in the village of Đurđin in the north of Vojvodina.
The competition of "painters", as reapers are called in the Subotica region, is the reason for the traditional gathering of a large number of Croats from Bač to demonstrate the old way of performing harvest work.
This year, the event, which has more ethnographic and touristic than sporting value, brought together 23 fishing couples from Subotica settlements mostly inhabited by Croats, then from Croatia, BiH and Hungary, as well as a large number of spectators.
The prize was presented to the best drawing couple by the representative of the mayor of Subotica, and the leadership of the Croats in Serbia supported the traditional gathering of the Croats from Bač with their presence.
The drawing competition is one of a total of about 20 manifestations of the harvest festivities of the Bač Croats - better known as Dužijanca, which is celebrated every year from April to the end of August.
Dužijanca is a public and general celebration of the end of the harvest, which has become a trademark not only of the Croats of Bač - Bunjevac, to whom this custom originally belongs, but also of the entire city of Subotica.
During the five months of celebrating the harvest festivities, over 20 church, folklore, literary, musical and ethnographic events are held, the aim of which was to thank God for the fruits of the earth.
"Dužijanca" is organized by the eponymous Association of Bunjevac Croats from Subotica.
