An agreement that will enable better collection of fines for traffic violations abroad

Representatives of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament reached a temporary political agreement on Wednesday on a directive that should facilitate the enforcement of fines for drivers who commit traffic violations in another member state.

The temporary political agreement, which still needs to be confirmed by the Council and the Parliament to become law, refers to the amendment of the 2015 directive on the cross-border exchange of information on road traffic offences.

"The revised law will ensure equal treatment for all drivers in the EU, regardless of their citizenship", said the Belgian minister for mobility, Georges Gilkinet.

The new directive will now, in addition to the most common and serious offenses such as speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, also include other offences.

These include failure to keep the distance between vehicles, ignoring overtaking restrictions, dangerous overtaking, parking violations such as parking too close to an intersection or zebra crossing, crossing a solid white line, driving in the wrong direction, not following emergency corridor rules, or using an overloaded vehicle.

After the new rules are formally adopted, the member states will have two and a half years to transpose the directive into their national legislation, reports despicable.
