Author of the article: Zoran Sova

The Society of Friends of Matica Hrvatska organized the 52nd Croatian Book Week from November 10 to 12, 2024 in the large hall of the Croatian Cultural Center starting at 18:30 p.m.

The guest lecturer was Mr. Ante Nadomir Tadić-Šutra, Croatian writer, composer, defender and retired officer from Knin, and the guest speaker was Zoran Sova from Las Vegas.

The topics of the lectures were:

    • Croatian rulers from their arrival to the end of the 11th century, with a focus on 1100 years since the coronation of King Tomislav, the first Croatian king, and 950 years since the coronation of Dmitri Zvonimir. As part of the lecture, Mr. Šutra presented his poetry book Stožina.
    • Popes and Croats, a topic in which Mr. Sutra listed the names of 10 popes important for the Croatian people and country. Pope Ivan VIII was the first to recognize the Croatian state in a letter sent to Ban Branimir in 879. In 1519, Pope Leo X proclaimed us the Forerunner of Christianity, Antemurale Christianitatis. We received the first recognition of our independence during the Homeland War from Pope John Paul II.
As part of the second evening of lectures, Mr. Šutra presented his book Anera, as well as the book Mjes boje jagode, authored by Katarina Pejaković from Vancouver.
    • The third evening was opened by Zoran Sova with his book of fairy tales Luke's Adventures. He emphasized that the best way to preserve the Croatian language in the diaspora is for children to read books in the Croatian language. He added that this year we are celebrating the 600th anniversary of the birth of Queen Katarina Kosača.
Together with Mr. Šutrom presented the book Knin writers to his town, published in 2000 by Matica hrvatska Knin, with which writers and painters from Knin contributed to the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the liberation of Knin.
    • The lecture was finished by Mr. Šutra with the emotional theme of Families in anticipation of Croatian warriors. None of those present could resist tears.

All three evenings were excellently led by Mr. Davor Razlog, president of the Society of Friends of Matica Hrvatska from Vancouver. Thanks to the hosts for the warm welcome and the audience that came in large numbers.
