Writer, photographer and designer from Chile with Croatian roots, Jorge Luis Subiabre Matiacha, dedicated the exhibition titled 'Where my roots are' to his great-grandfather Tomi Matijaca.
It was an emotional evening in the Vitturi castle in Kastelani, and Jorge wanted to bring his great-grandfather home in this way.
The exhibition was held with the support of the Croatian Mother of Emigrants, the Split-Dalmatia County, the City of Kaštela, the Museum of the City of Kaštela, the Museo Regional De Iquique, and the Kaštelan branch of Matica Hrvatska. Special thanks for the realization of this exhibition, the author sent to Anta Ćaleta, head of the Croatian Mother of Emigrants Split, for her support and enthusiasm regarding the topic of emigrants, and to Blanka Šestan from the Studio of Good Ideas, as the creative director of the exhibition.
Jorge Luis Subiabre Matiacha was born and raised in Punta Arenas, Chile and is a fourth generation descendant of Croatians from Chile. As could be heard, his great-grandfather, on his mother's side, Tomo Matijaca, left back in 1903, from Kaštel Lukšić to distant South America, to Chile, to the city of Punta Arenas. The author documented the descendants of Croatian emigrants in Chilean Patagonia with photographic portraits. After arriving in Croatia, he presented his author's work through a series of exhibitions of portraits of the descendants of Croatian emigrants, both in Zagreb and in Split, Brač and Pula.
Now it was finally Kaštela's turn, the great-grandson wanted to return his great-grandfather to his homeland and he succeeded. The photos are preserved from oblivion in the best possible way by numerous Croatian families who went "bellies for bread" to a distant world, and after more than a century, Jorge returned them home, where they belong.
