On Saturday, September 28th, on Long Island, NY, and despite the rain and wind, the Croatian-American diaspora organization Naša Budućnost celebrated their annual Bocce tournament, bringing together a vibrant community rooted in the traditions of Ilovik. Founded in the 1990s, Naša Budućnost aims to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Croatians.
The tournament featured a spirited competition with 16 teams participating. Players, some with ancestral ties to Ilovik and others hailing from various regions of Croatia, showcased their skills in this beloved game. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and camaraderie, proving that even adverse weather conditions couldn’t dampen the community’s enthusiasm.
At the end of the day, the top honors went to first-place winners Bernardo Škoda and Jeremy Raguzin. Their skillful play was closely followed by strong performances from the second and third place winners.
Bocce, known locally in Croatia, as “boće,” “boćanje,” or “balote,” is much more than just a game; it is a cherished tradition steeped in history. Originating from ancient civilizations, bocce made its way to Croatia, where it evolved into a beloved pastime, particularly in coastal regions and their hinterlands. The game emphasizes precision and strategy, embodying the spirit of friendly rivalry and social connection. For Croatian communities, it serves as a way to bond, celebrate, and pass down cultural values.
Naša Budućnost recognizes the importance of maintaining these traditions. The organization believes that events like the Bocce tournament are vital for fostering connections among community members and instilling pride in their heritage.
Current leadership, including President Jessica Raguzin, Vice President Victoria Vidulich, Secretary Vanessa Raguzin, and Treasurer Jessica Budinich, alongside Public Relations Managers Alenka Sokoša and Katarina Bezmalinović, is committed to growing the outreach of the tournament and other cultural initiatives. Their goal is not only to keep these traditions alive but to engage younger generations, ensuring that the love for bocce—and the cultural connections it represents—endures.
As Naša Budućnost looks to the future, they hope to expand participation and bring more awareness to their events, inviting anyone with a passion for Croatian culture and heritage to join in the fun.
The annual Bocce tournament organized by Naša Budućnost was a resounding success, proving that community spirit can thrive even in challenging weather. As the organization continues to uphold the traditions of Croatian culture, events like this tournament play a crucial role in bringing people together, celebrating heritage, and fostering a sense of belonging among the diaspora. With dedicated leadership and a commitment to cultural preservation, the future of Naša Budućnost—and its beloved Bocce tournament—looks promising.
