FIFA Volunteers: Behind the Scenes of World Football’s Biggest Stage

The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), founded in 1904 and headquartered in Zurich, stands at the center of global football. As the sport’s governing authority, FIFA organizes the World Cup, regulates international competition, and drives the development of football worldwide.

While billions of viewers focus on the action on the pitch, a lesser-known but essential part of FIFA’s operations happens behind the scenes—through its vast network of volunteers.

A Global System Powered by Volunteers

FIFA is officially a non-profit organization, yet it operates on a massive financial scale, generating billions in revenue during World Cup cycles through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and commercial partnerships. Its president, Gianni Infantino, earns multimillion-dollar annual compensation, reflecting the size and complexity of the organization.

At the same time, FIFA relies heavily on volunteers to help deliver its events. From logistics and media coordination to translation and fan engagement, volunteers are integral to match-day operations. In many cases, dozens are assigned to a single game. They are not paid salaries, but FIFA typically covers meals, uniforms, and local transportation. For most, however, the value lies in access and experience rather than compensation.

Croatian Voices from Behind the Scenes

Croatians Online spoke with Ivan and Marin from Križevci, as well as Tobias from Munich—all experienced FIFA volunteers.vIvan, a sports reporter, and Marin, a high school mathematics teacher, used their vacation time in 2025 to attend the Croatia vs. Colombia match.

“You get front-row access to a major global sporting event. You see how a sold-out match is organized and become part of that process. For someone who loves sports, it’s an incredible opportunity,” said Ivan, who also volunteered at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Marin highlighted the broader impact of the experience: “You meet people from around the world, build connections, and expand your perspective. And of course, you get to travel.” Tobias, a long-time volunteer, emphasized the unique access the role provides: “I’ve been a FIFA volunteer for 20 years and attended five World Cups. I saw Croatia play in Russia in 2018. In this role, you experience things no regular fan can. I highly recommend it.”

Inside the Role

Volunteers often work directly within the media segment, providing essential operational support. “We assist with media logistics—for example, translating from Croatian to English and vice versa when needed,” Ivan explained. Although unpaid, the role offers a rare opportunity to experience the inner workings of the world’s most-watched sporting events.

The relationship between FIFA and its volunteers reflects a broader exchange: operational support in return for access, experience, and global connection. For many, that trade-off is more than worthwhile.
