Longevity, consistency, and volunteerism are the cornerstones of success. These values perfectly describe Rudar Social Club in Astoria, New York—an enduring gathering place for the Croatian community.
Eugene Zuiliani, one of the founders and a current board member, recalls how it all began: “Several of us enjoyed spending time together after work and on weekends—playing soccer, going hunting, playing cards, sharing ideas, listening to our favorite music, and enjoying homemade meals. We decided to bring all of that under one roof. We pooled our money, bought a building, and that’s how Rudar was born,” said the energetic and forward-thinking founder.
Roots in Istria and a Mining Legacy
Most of the founders come from the Labin area in Istria and nearby villages such as Tupljak, Raša and Potpićan—regions historically known for coal mining. The name Rudar, meaning “miner,” honors the men who worked in those mines. Many of them emigrated to the United States in the 1970s in search of new opportunities. While the mines are no longer operational, their legacy lives on through the club.
A Hub for Croatian Culture and Cuisine
Rudar has long been known for its exceptional kitchen, which remains one of its strongest attractions. A significant part of that reputation is owed to longtime chef Suzana Nemarić, whose dedication and consistency have helped maintain the high quality and authenticity of the cuisine over the years.
Because of its spacious hall, bar, and stage, Rudar frequently hosts dinner dances and events for Croatian organizations and the broader community. “Rudar is one of the last true strongholds of authentic Croatian cuisine,” said current president Suzan Runko. The club also maintained an active soccer team for many years, further strengthening its role as a community hub, although the team is currently inactive.

Running a Club Like a Business
“When I took over as president two years ago, I realized the club needed a refresh—both visually and operationally,” said Suzan Runko. “I approached it with a business mindset. What many people don’t realize is how expensive it is to operate in New York—insurance, payroll, food, maintenance—it all adds up. It’s easy to spend $30,000 a month here.”
She emphasized the importance of innovation and outreach:
“We are working to attract a broader audience, including Americans, through social media and modern channels. The goal is sustainability and having some financial stability.” Suzan is supported in her efforts by her husband, Atilio Runko, as well as board member Gracijela (Grace) Zuiliani.
The Challenge of Engaging the Next Generation
Like many diaspora organizations, Rudar faces the challenge of engaging younger generations. “Social habits have changed. Younger people don’t feel the same need to gather in large community groups as we once did. That’s one of the biggest challenges we face moving forward,” noted club leadership.
A Team Effort and Strong Legacy
Throughout its history, Rudar has been led by many dedicated presidents and volunteers. Among them is Renato Rajković, who has served in leadership roles in the past and continues to be an active, hands-on contributor to the club’s daily operations.
The current board also includes Ivan Zgombić and Anton Žic from the island of Krk, whose organizations frequently host events at Rudar. “We understand and support the role Rudar plays as a pillar of Croatian culture and cuisine, and we are happy to contribute to its continued success,” they said. Over the years, countless volunteers have passed through Rudar, contributing their time and effort behind the scenes—from organizing events to maintaining the space—ensuring the club’s longevity.
Congratulations to Rudar Social Club for everything it has done—and continues to do—for the Croatian community.
