American Election Inspires Lecture at University of Zadar, Drawing a Packed Audience

On December 4th, a student organization of the History Department at one of Croatia’s largest public universities, the University of Zadar, hosted a lecture panel on a topic none other than.. the recent US elections!

The panel included history professor dr. Branko Kasalo, and sociology professor  dr. Krešimir Krolo.

Volunteer correspondent for Croatians Online, local Croatian-American Albert Anthony Bozulic, commented on the event from his perspective as an audience member:

“The two speakers each gave their own subjective presentation

on this topic, taking the audience on a journey from the historical

events in the US that led to the establishment of a predominantly

two-party political system, to the modern-day election of 2024

and the various emerging trends in the media as well as social

media platforms like Twitter (X) in terms of influencing voter sentiment,

but also what the US election results could mean for Europe looking ahead.”

During one moment, historical quotes by Ronald Reagan were shown, while images of John F. Kennedy and Donald Trump were interwoven with historic maps of electoral votes, further emphasizing fundamental constitutional differences in how the US and Croatian Presidents are elected.

“After the presentations, audience members, who were predominantly

local college students, engaged in a lively question & answer session

    with the 2 professors.

This type of event, which drew a standing-room only crowd despite the

pouring early-December rain outside in this coastal university city, where

a sculpture of renowned Croatian zoologist Špiro Brušina sits outside the old campus building, overlooking the sea… shows that US presidential elections are very much a topic of interest on this side of the Atlantic, once again linking us together,”  Albert Anthony concluded.

The contributor also writes for NYC-based global financial platform Seeking Alpha, under pen name Albert Anthony, and from 2007 onward was on the executive committee of the now-defunct Croatian New Yorker Club which was led by New Yorker Anton Angelich at the time, organizing events like Croatian summer picnics on Long Island.
