Wellness Wisdom: Doctor’s Advice – Fall Edition

As the leaves turn golden and daylight stretches shorter, it’s natural to start withdrawing indoors. This Fall, we turn to Dr. Alen Juginovic for guidance on maintaining health and wellbeing as sunlight hours dwindle.

Understanding the Importance of Daylight Exposure

Dr. Juginovic reminds us that even when days grow shorter, exposure to natural light remains essential. Sunlight plays a key role in regulating our internal clock (circadian rhythms), supporting mood balance, and helping our body sustain healthy levels of vitamin D.

Practical Tips for Embracing Natural Light this Fall

  • Morning light is best: Try to get outside within the first hour of waking — even 10‑15 minutes of daylight can help reset your body’s rhythm.

  • Light breaks during the day: Open curtains and blinds wide; if possible, position work or relaxation areas by windows.

  • Outdoor activity: Walk, stretch, garden, or engage in some light exercise outdoors in midday when sunlight is strongest.

  • Light therapy: For those in areas with very short days or limited sunlight, consider using a bright light lamp, especially in the morning.

  • Sleep hygiene: Dim lights in the evening, avoid bright screens just before bedtime, so the body can wind down in alignment with natural dark/light cues.

Why It Matters

  • Mood & mental health: Reduced daylight is linked to seasonal mood shifts; staying exposed to daylight helps counteract seasonal depressive feelings.

  • Sleep quality: Consistent daylight exposure supports deeper, more restful sleep.

  • Overall wellness: Healthy vitamin D levels also support immune function, bone health, and more.

As fall advances, don’t let the shorter days dim your wellness. Dr. Juginovic encourages you to stay proactive: soak up the daylight you can, arrange your spaces to allow natural light in, and give priority to your light exposure .  Your mood, sleep, and health will benefit.

Here’s to a bright and balanced fall season!
