This month’s Wellness Wisdom, we dive into a crucial aspect of overall well-being that often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle of modern life—sleep. This idea comes from the recent NYC Association of Croatian American Professionals (ACAP) Masterclass Series titled “Rest, Resilience and Results: How Optimizing Sleep, Mental and Physical Health Drive Optimal Performance,” as this very concept was brought to the forefront.
The event, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, featured two distinguished panelists—Dr. Vladimir Ivkovic, a translational neuroscientist, integrative physiologist, and former firefighter/EMT, and Dr. Alen Juginovic, a physician and postdoctoral researcher at Harvard Medical School where he studies the impact of sleep quality on health.—who shared their extensive knowledge on the importance of sleep for cognitive and physical health. Hosted by ACAP National Executive Board Member, Jasmine Golubic, the conversation sparked lively discussions and offered actionable insights for attendees seeking to improve their health and well-being.
During the session, Dr. Ivkovic and Dr. Juginovic emphasized that optimizing sleep is not just about getting enough hours of rest. The quality of that sleep is just as important. Both doctors, drawing from their wealth of research and clinical experience, explained that good sleep hygiene has a profound impact on both brain function and physical health.
When we sleep well, our brains have the opportunity to repair, consolidate memories, and even enhance emotional regulation. The doctors noted that poor sleep or irregular sleep patterns can impair cognitive functions, leading to difficulty concentrating, memory issues, and even mood disturbances.
Both doctors strongly advocated for developing healthy sleep routines, which they believe is crucial in achieving lasting health benefits. Both doctors suggested that attendees start by evaluating their current habits and making small changes, such as reducing screen time before bed and creating calm, relaxing and meditative practices in their daily life.
Studies that show individuals who prioritize sleep are more likely to experience higher productivity, better emotional regulation, and improved interpersonal relationships. They also tend to experience fewer health problems, which means they can sustain a higher level of performance over time. By consistently making sleep a priority, individuals can improve their overall health and achieve sustained success, both in their careers and personal lives.
Following the panel discussion, attendees engaged in a dynamic Q&A session, where Dr. Ivkovic and Dr. Juginovic answered questions about practical strategies for improving sleep, overcoming common obstacles, and managing work-life balance.
The event concluded with a lively networking reception, where participants had the opportunity to connect with each other and further discuss the ideas shared during the session.
Takeaways for Optimal Health
As we close out this month’s edition of Wellness Wisdom, here are a few key takeaways to help optimize your sleep and improve your overall health brought to us by Dr. Ivkovic and Dr. Juginovic’s discussion:
- Create a consistent sleep schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is essential for regulating your circadian rhythm.
- Improve sleep quality: Focus on creating a relaxing pre-bedtime routine, such as meditation or reading, to wind down.
- Manage stress: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily life to reduce anxiety and improve your ability to sleep.
- Prioritize sleep for resilience: Recognize that sleep is a key factor in building mental and physical resilience, helping you recover from daily stresses and challenges.
By adopting these strategies and emphasizing the importance of sleep, you’ll be well on your way to boosting your health, resilience, and performance in all areas of life.
Thank you to ACAP, Dr. Ivkovic, and Dr. Juginovic for an informative panel discussion and providing essential tips for leading a healthier, more balanced life.
